When the Oakland Raiders drafted outside linebacker Miles Burris in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, they thought he would make an impact this season. With the injury to starter Aaron Curry, Burris was thrown straight into the fire in preseason and played his way into the starting line-up. So far he has been one of the most surprising members of the defense. “I thought Miles was as football player and I was very excited when he was still on the board when we were drafting that he was there with that pick because I wasn’t sure he was going to be,” Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver said. Burris has shown tremendous instincts early in his career and has adjusted to the speed of the league well. In college, Burris was known for his pass rushing prowess, but with the Raiders he was been asked to do everything as the weak side linebacker. This season, the 6-2, 240 pound rookie has recorded 25 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and two pass break-ups. Last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Burris showed his ability, hunting down quarterback Chad Henne for his first career sack. “Miles loves contact and loves football, like we’ve said from day one,” Tarver said. “The guys respond to him because when he makes a mistake, he really wants to know how to get it right and rarely does he repeat the mistake.” One of the most impressive traits Burris has brought with him to the NFL is his tackling ability. Rarely do you see a rookie that has the speed to close on skill players and the strength to wrap up. Several times Burris has made open field tackles that could have resulted in big plays for the offense. He displays the discipline to be in the right position and desire to finish the tackle. “He is chasing the football,” Tarver said. “He loves it. When you do that, those are the guys you’re excited for, those are the guys you want to build around.”   Be sure to check out other great articles at Sports Media 101. var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
