Free agent status is something that most, if not all, players covet immensely, as they can not only find their way to multimillion dollar contracts and long-term job security, but they can also choose to play in a locale that’s closer to their families and friends.

Steven Jackson just became the newest member of the 2013 free agent class, thanks in large part to a bit of acquiescence on the part of the Rams front office, choosing to let Jackson void the final season on his contract even though the incentives in his current deal allowing for that decision have not been reached.

Jackson, 29, has played his entire career thus far in St. Louis after being selected 24th overall in the 2004 draft.

The move to let Jackson leave via free agency is a puzzling one, as the Rams don’t exactly have a replacement for him waiting in the wings. Jackson’s primary backup, Daryl Richardson, has played well thus far this season, but trusting him to step into the void left by Jackson without a hiccup would seem to be risky on the surface, given his inexperience.

Now in his ninth NFL season, Jackson has rushed for 9,288 yards and 52 touchdowns to go along with 376 receptions for 3,051 yards and eight touchdowns through the air.
