In the latest episode of “Football Nation Today,” Alex recaps championship weekend and talks about the other biggest stories across the NFL:1st Down: The Patriots and Falcons both blew second half leads to the Ravens and 49ers, but Alex says the losses weren’t the same.  The Patriots lost the game, whereas the Falcons blew the game. The Ravens were more physical than the Patriots were, and dictated the pace of the game.  Once again, the Patriots offense was stopped by a more physical, aggressive defense.  And no, the story is bit more nuanced than merely citing Tom Brady’s 7-7 record in his last 14 postseason games. Alex says though the Patriots lost, they’ll be right back in the championship game next season, and should win it.  The Patriots’ reign at the top of the AFC, with young weapons on offense and an improving defense, should last for several more seasons. Colin Kaepernick put in another spectacular effort in the NFC Championship Game, as his arm led San Francisco’s second half comeback.  The Falcons tried to hand the game away, and the 49ers took them up on the offer. The Ravens and 49ers, the two more physical and defensive minded teams, beat the more finesse Patriots and 49ers, but Alex reminds us their offenses both played a significant role in their second half comebacks too. Oh, and did you know Jim and John Harbaugh are brothers?  Go figure…2nd Down: No African Americans were hired to fill the eight head coaching vacancies this offseason.  This has led many to question the effectiveness of the Rooney Rule, and speculate whether the NFL is a racist operation. One would think there should be more black coaches given the makeup of the league, but Alex says the lack of minority coaches is more circumstantial than anything else.  In 2013, calling it a race issue seems to be a bit simplistic.3rd Down: In the “Big Up or Slow Down” segment, Alex debates whether former Raiders coach Bill Callahan threw the Super Bowl in 2002, if the Eagles were wise to hire Chip Kelly and if the Jets General Manager search was an epic failure.4th Down: In the “Reimer Rant,” Alex expresses his frustration to those who were apparently unaware that Bill Belichick is bad with the media.  Shocking!Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.Get ready for the Super Bowl preview show next week.  It will be heavy on the Ravens/49ers talk, and light on the Harbaugh talk.
