Something I definitely never expected to write is that Ravens Joe Flacco drives 92 yards on Steelers defense for game winning touchdown.  But we’ll get to that, the Ravens almost made it look too easy to start the game when the first play from scrimmage Ray Rice scored a 76 yard touchdown that was called back due to Torrey Smith holding William Gay.  It was a good call because Gay was in position to tackle Rice if he hadn’t been held.  The Ravens then continued to march up the field and on a first and ten from the 12 Gay was flagged for pass interference in the endzone to give the Ravens first and goal on the one yard line.  The Steelers held them and the Ravens settled for a field goal.  The Steelers were held to 7 plays in the first quarter after going three and out their first time with the ball.

Roethlisberger moved the ball right up the field in his second opportunity and on 3rd and 7 on the Baltimore 18 Roethlisberger hit Ward across the middle when Ward was popped by Ray Lewis.  Hines went to the ground and lost the ball after hitting the ground and was pretty shook up because the hit was helmet-to-helmet, the play was not flagged.  Ward was helped off the field and never returned due to concussion like symptoms.  It was ruled a catch on the field and would have been 4th and inches when Baltimore challenged that it was a catch and won the challenge.  So, not only did we not get the flag which would have given us 1st and goal but the catch was overturned forcing us to settle for a field goal.     A penalty for unnecessary roughness (a helmet-to-helmet) was called on Ryan Clark in Baltimore’s final drive of the half that helped to put the Ravens in position for a 51 yard field goal to take the lead at the half 9-6.

Steelers came out and moved the ball great to start the second half until 1st and ten on the Baltimore 14 Suggs jumped a pass from Roethlisberger and intercepted the ball to halt the drive.  The Ravens turned that into the first touchdown of the game after a 23 yard pass interference call again gave the Ravens 1st and goal from the 1 yard line.  Roethlisberger rebounded fine though and moved the ball right back up the field.  To start the fourth quarter Roethlisberger scrambled for a touchdown that was overturned that his knee was down before the ball crossed the plane.  No matter though, Mendenhall walked the ball in on the next play.

On the next Baltimore series, the James Harrison we’ve been missing this season made his presence known all night recording 3 sacks including a strip sack of Flacco that was recovered by William Gay at the Pittsburgh 42.  The offense took advantage and with a magnificent play that only Roethlisberger can create threw a shot that looked to be intended for Antonio Brown in the endzone but Mike Wallace came whizzing in to grab the pass.  This gave the Steelers their first lead of the night at 20-16 with just over two minutes left in the game.    Normally our defense would relish in this type of opportunity to shut down Joe Flacco and the Ravens to win the game, but they just couldn’t.  Flacco orchastrated a beautiful drive right up the field even converting on 4th down.  When with 8 seconds left on the clock, rookie Torrey Smith beat William Gay and Ryan Clark for the game winning touchdown.

The Ravens now take a lead over the Steelers in the standings at 6-2 to the Steelers 6-3.  They also hold the tie breaker over the Steelers if we end the season with the same record.  There is still a lot of football to play but this was a crushing blow for the Steelers.  Hopefully we’ll see them in January to right the ship.
