As expected, the Ravens placed the franchise tag on running back Ray Rice, according to the team’s Web site. This doesn’t come as a surprise as it was expected the Ravens were going to tag Rice. The franchise tag will pay him in the neighborhood of $7.7 million. In the past, the franchise tag has been a prerequisite for the Ravens signing someone to a long-term deal. Cornerback Chris McAlister was tagged in consecutive seasons before agreeing to a seven-year, $55-million contract. Terrell Suggs was also tagged in consecutive seasons before agreeing to a six-year, $62.5 million contract. Lastly, just last season, Haloti Ngata was tagged before agreeing to a five-year, $61 million contract. It’s not a bad thing when the Ravens tag their players. This buys them some time to work out a long-term deal with Rice. Shifting topics, the Ravens officially released wide receiver Lee Evans and cornerback Chris Carr, according to the team’s Web site.
