Washington Redskins defensive back Phillip Buchanon's four-game suspension was due to a violation of the league's performance enhancing drug policy, the league announced Friday.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan revealed that Buchanon had been suspended a month ago but did not disclose the reason.
Buchanon was used as a nickel back last season, collecting 49 tackles and two interceptions while playing all 16 games.
He entered the NFL in 2002 and has 20 interceptions and eight return touchdowns for Oakland, Houston, Tampa Bay, Detroit and Washington.
