Redskins fill 53rd spot with cornerback Butler

Associated Press  |  Last updated September 01, 2012
The Washington Redskins filled the final spot on their 53-man roster Saturday by signing cornerback Crezdon Butler. Butler was a fifth-round draft from Clemson by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. He played in four games as a rookie, then was waived last year and signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Butler then hurt his ankle in Arizona's season opener and was played on injured reserve, ending his season. He returned for training camp this year but was cut Friday. ''He had an injury, and we think he's recovered from it,'' Washington coach Mike Shanahan said. ''And if he has, I think we've got a good football player.'' The Redskins had room to add a player after cutting their roster to 52 on Friday, one below the league's limit for the regular season. Butler gives Washington five cornerbacks. Shanahan said he was forced into some late roster adjustments Friday after the NFL announced that safety Tanard Jackson was suspended indefinitely. Jackson was a candidate to start, but he's now been suspended three times in his career for violating the league's substance abuse policy and can't apply for reinstatement until next year. ''I was disappointed because I really like the guy,'' Shanahan said. ''I like who he is. I like the way he worked. The guy's never been arrested in his life. I'm just really disappointed for him. He's out for a year. ... He's made a couple of mistakes, but, you know, I just like what he stood for.'' Shanahan said he has decided on a starting running back but is keeping it a secret for now. His decision to cut Tim Hightower on Friday left him with three young tailbacks: second-year players Evan Royster and Roy Helu, Jr. and rookie Alfred Morris. ''You'd like one guy to carry the load if he's got that ability, but nowadays it's very hard to find that guy,'' Shanahan said. ''But we've got three guys that I believe in with a lot of ability.'' --- Online: http://bigstory.ap.org/NFL-Pro32 and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL
