ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — From healthy, first-place surprise to battered and struggling, the Washington Redskins had their fortunes take another dive Monday when running back Tim Hightower was declared out for the season with a torn knee ligament and receiver Santana Moss underwent hand surgery that is expected to sideline him for 5-7 weeks.

The Washington Redskins started 2011 hot and had what looked like a promising season but now after just a couple injuries it looks like 2011 will end in disaster. That’s right the ‘Skins have lost their two best offensive weapons in one weekend. Santana Moss will be out for an extended period of time, while Tim Hightower will need season ending surgery.
Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan expects to use either second-year pro Anthony Armstrong or rookie Niles Paul at the starting wide receiver spot previously occupied by Santana Moss, who is expected to miss five to seven weeks after breaking his left hand.
Moss had “three pins put in his index finger in that area” during surgery Monday, according to Shanahan.
