The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason unsure if Alex Smith–who expressed interest in testing free agency–would return to the team next season and compete for the starting job at quarterback. Now, it appears Smith is leaning towards returning to the team he’s spent his entire career with–that is of course when the lockout comes to an end.
According to Mindi Bach of CSNBayArea.com, Smith indicated on Tuesday how he will most likely return for his seventh season to the team that drafted him with the first overall overall pick in 2005. Smith was expected to test free agency after turning down a one-year offer (which is apparently still on the table) from the 49ers prior to the start of the lockout, but San Francisco seems like his best option for a starting job–which is most likely why he wants to return in 2011.
