The Denver Broncos‘ first mandatory mini-camp is less than two weeks away, meaning the clock is ticking for Matt Prater‘s decision: to hold out, or not to hold out.

Maybe he won’t have to decide at all. Klis reports –

The Broncos have made progress in recent days with Prater on a five-year deal. The team tendered him a 2012 salary of $2.6 million through the franchise tag. Both sides hope a long-term deal is reached in time for Prater to join the Broncos at their mandatory minicamp June 12-14.

The Broncos and Prater were reportedly “far apart” on contract negotiations a few weeks ago, so this is an encouraging development. With five game-winning or game-tying field goals last year alone, the Broncos want to lean on Prater’s leg for the next five years, should the need arise.
