Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was quite the popular topic prior to the 2011 season after former NFL great and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter said Johnson didn’t even make the list of his top six wideouts in the NFL. As everyone knows, Johnson proved Carter wrong by displaying the best season of his five-year career by catching 96 passes for 1,681 yards to go along with 16 touchdowns (all career highs) and because of this–it looks like the Lions plan on rewarding their star wideout.
According to Anwar Richardson via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the Lions want to sign Johnson to a new long-term contract before he’s eligible for free agency following the 2012 season. Not only is Johnson scheduled to make $14 million next year, but Florio points out how it would most likely cost Detroit at least $16.8 million if they decided to use the franchise tag on their wideout for the 2013 season–so a new long-term deal now could be beneficial for both parties.
