Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne is facing considerable time on the sidelines, and may even be out for the year, after separating his left shoulder, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday, citing sources.
Henne sustained the injury to his non-throwing left shoulder during Sunday's 26-16 loss to the Chargers, which moved the Dolphins to 0-4.
He will seek a second opinion from an independent shoulder specialist this week and the report from the doctor will determine whether he will be able to play through the injury or require surgery, The Miami Herald reported.
The Sun Sentinel source said the shoulder was separated badly enough that even in the best-case scenario he would be out for at least a while.
The news heaps further pressure on coach Tony Sparano, who likely has to win one of the Dolphins' next couple of games to keep his job.
Citing a high-ranking NFL source, the Sun Sentinel reported Monday that Sparano was "certain" to remain at the helm through the bye week and be coach for the Oct. 17 trip to the New York Jets, but his future beyond that Week 6 game could not be guaranteed.
