Oh, Jets. The minute New York drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft, a new quarterback controversy was born. The job is the rookie’s to win, according to ESPN.com, but even if he can’t grab the starting role from Mark Sanchez, Smith could still get some playing time. “The coaches are toying with the idea of turning Smith into what [Tim] Tebow was supposed to be last season — a change-of-pace quarterback (assuming he doesn’t win the starting job). Smith would have a package of plays, mainly read-option runs that could exploit his speed,” Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com wrote on Monday. Tebow’s presence and occasional plays is the wildcat did a number on Sanchez’s confidence last season. There’s no reason to think a similar role given to Smith wouldn’t accomplish the same problem. Smith rarely ran read-option plays at West Virginia and flashed his mobility better in the pocket or when plays started to fall apart. Regardless of who is under center, it’s likely to be a ...

The Jets reportedly are “toying with the idea” of using rookie Geno Smith as a “change-of-pace quarterback” if he doesn’t earn the starting job.
The New York Jets don’t have a clue about who the QB is that they drafted. Sure, they know his name is Geno Smith, but beyond that, it appears that their scouting of him is something that nobody else saw. According to ESPN New York, the Jets plan on using Smith as a change-of-pace QB in the event that Mark Sanchez earns the starting job for the 2013 season. If this scenario sounds...
The New York Jets are at it again, at least they might be according to ESPN New York. Rich Cimini, in his camp preview of the New York Jets, mentioned that the Jets may be thinking about using Geno Smith in the way Tebow was originally meant to be used by the team.

Mark Sanchez is holding his annual “Jets West” camp and, unsurprisingly, Geno Smith is a no-show. While several New York Jets skill position players showed up for team bonding, weight lifting, and other forms of practice led by Sanchez in Mission Viejo, Calif., the incumbent’s biggest competition at quarterback was training in Florida on his [...]

In this scenario, Smith would have a package of plays — mostly of the read-option variety — that could “exploit his speed.”
Geno Smith may have passed on Mark Sanchez’s Jets West camp, but in his eyes, he and Sanchez are cool.
While speaking to OCNN, Smith said ‘he and Sanchez have no hard feelings.”
“Me and Mark are cool. There’s no hard feelings or anything,” Smith said. “He’s up there getting some work with the guys, I’m down here getting work, some guys are going to be down here...
The New York Jets do some pretty strange things. Keeping Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback for this length of time is one of them, but the latest news out of Jets camp is even more puzzling than that. Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reported on Monday morning that Rex Ryan and company are “toying with” [...]

After a slow news weekend for the NFL, the New York Jets made news today with rumors regarding their quarterback position. They haven't named a starter, and this has nothing to do with Jets West. Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reported that the Jets are thinking about using rookie Geno Smith as a “change-of-pace quarterback”:
"The coaches are toying with the idea...
Over the last seven NFL drafts, and especially since the implementation of the NFL rookie scale after the 2010 draft, teams have used their 2nd round picks as much as their first round picks to target potential “quarterbacks of the future”, or at least viable competition for their incumbent starters. 11 quarterbacks (Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Luck, Griffin, Tannehill,...
