GREEN BAY, Wis. If Nick Collins wants to return to football, it won't be for the Green Bay Packers. Collins' agent, Alan Herman, confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday that the Packers will release the three-time Pro Bowl safety, who underwent a single-level cervical fusion last September. In Week 2 of last season, with the Packers playing in Carolina, Collins had to be carted off the field on a stretcher after a tackle attempt put his neck in an awkward position. Collins, 28, went through multiple tests last month and is still seeking more opinions on a possible return to football, but the Packers have been telegraphing this move for some time. Without even knowing the results of Collins' tests, coach Mike McCarthy wasn't optimistic about his player's football future. "If Nick was my son, I would not let him play," McCarthy told reporters in March at the NFL annual meetings in Florida. Last Thursday, general manager Ted Thompson addressed Collins' future in his predraft press conference. "We don't have any determination at this point," he said. "It's still in process, which it has been. It's a process that continues. "I think it's more important to make the right determination than being fast. I'm sure (Collins) is anxious and all of our people are anxious. We'll see." Collins, a husband and father of four children, could still potentially be at risk of further injuring his neck if he decides to return to the NFL with another team. In a very similar case in 2006, the Packers had to decide what to do with wide receiver Terrence Murphy. As a rookie, Murphy injured his neck and tests later showed that he was dealing with spinal stenosis. This caused Green Bay to release Murphy, though he did not retire from the NFL until a year later. Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.
