The Dolphins spent a first-round pick on Ryan Tannehill in April's draft, but that doesn't mean he'll be starter in Week 1.
Team owner Stephen Ross told NFL.com on Monday that he expects veteran quarterback Matt Moore will "probably be the starter" against the Houston Texans on Sept. 9.
"I don't think they're going to rush (Ryan Tannehill) into anything," Ross said. "He's going to have to win the starting job. I think Matt Moore will probably be the starter, and I wish him the best."
Tannehill, who started only 19 games at quarterback in College Station, is familiar with the Dolphins' playbook after playing for offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in college.
"There's definitely some tweaks, some stuff they brought in from Green Bay, that stuff is new to me," Tannehill told FOXSports.com last Thursday. "But I would say 80 percent of it is the same. I think we changed the terminology and signals, but the majority of it is the same concepts and same plays."
Ross has been vocal that he doesn't want to rush Tannehill into playing until he's ready.
"The important thing is not to have great expectations up front, and bring him along," Ross told The Palm Beach Post last weekend.
Moore led the Dolphins to six wins in the final nine games of the 2011 season. Miami signed David Garrard in March to provide Moore with some competition for the starting gig.

If the owner of the Miami Dolphins has any say or thought on the matter, then the starting quarterback to begin the 2012 NFL season will be the incumbent, Matt Moore, and not the team’s No. 1 NFL Draft pick, Ryan Tannehill.
And to you, David Garrard, you could have probably stayed at home for another season, unless you feel comfortable wearing a baseball hat and carrying a clipboard...
The Dolphins have arguably the most unsettled quarterback situation in the league with 3 quarterbacks vying for the starting job, Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill, and David Garrard. Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross tipped the team’s hand today by saying that he expects Matt Moore to be the team’s week 1 starter over #8 overall pick Ryan Tannehill. This is significant not just because...

Forgive rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill if he looks lost. Since joining the Miami Dolphins, he has been trying to get around town without using a GPS.
Driving home one day from the team complex, Tannehill was determined to find his way without navigational help. He overshot his apartment and wound up instead on Alligator Alley halfway to the Everglades.
There are sure to be moments...
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins will handle their quarterback situation the way the Tennessee Titans did last season with Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker. As long as Moore wins, he’ll be the starter.
“They’ll continue to play Matt Moore as long as he’s producing & winning,” said Schefter per Evan Silva.
Moore had the Dolphins...
Even though the Miami Dolphins drafted quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft, owner Stephen Ross indicated during this year’s Fins Weekend that they don’t want to rush him him along.
“We drafted Tannehill because we thought he’d be a great franchise quarterback. He has all the intangibles, (he’s) a great athlete. The...

With the new collective bargaining agreement limiting the amount of on-field time coaches get with their players during the offseason, new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is making the most of every minute with fast-paced practices during this week's OTA sessions.
