The Texans made a surprise move in cutting third-round rookie defensive end Sam Montgomery and two others on Monday. It appears now we know why. Montgomery, running back Cierre Wood and linebacker Willie Jefferson were all sent home ahead of the Texans’ game in Kansas City on Sunday for what was deemed a violation of team rules. On Monday, the three players were released for apparently smoking marijuana in the team hotel, according to ESPN’s Tania Ganguli. Montgomery claimed that he walked into the hotel room Wood and Jefferson were sharing on Saturday and that the two were smoking a cigar. Later head coach Garry Kubiak called him in for a meeting and the three rookies were sent home. Jefferson’s agent Chad Cannon told ESPN that the players were indeed smoking a cigar and that drugs were not involved. He also noted that Jefferson was considering filing a grievance with the league, although that could delay his ability to sign elsewhere. “We’re discussing the possibility of filing a grievance,” Cannon said. “I need to be in touch with them and really figure if that’s the best route to take.” Wood and Jefferson were undrafted free agents, making their opportunity to find another job more difficult than the highly touted Montgomery.
