EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings received approval for public financing of a new stadium in May, and even before the designs are finished they are making moves to host their sport's biggest showcase.ESPN1500.com reported Thursday that the Vikings have submitted bids to host a Super Bowl in their new 975 million stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2016. Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development Lester Bagley told ESPN1500.com that bids have been placed to host either the 2018, '19 or '20 Super Bowls in the new stadium. The stadium will be built on the site of the current Metrodome, which hosted the Super Bowl in 1992."We're determined to bring a Super Bowl to Minnesota," Bagley told ESPN1500.com.Bagley told ESPN1500.com that Minnesota's preference would be hosting the Super Bowl in 2018. The website reported that the Vikings' bid had to be placed by Aug. 31 and the site of the 2018 Super Bowl likely will be announced at the NFL's spring meetings in 2014.Usually held at warmer-weather sites, the Super Bowl was held in Indianapolis' new Lucas Oil Stadium in 2012. The Vikings are hoping to add a retractable roof element to the new stadium and are attempting to see if they can fit it within the 975 million price estimate agreed to by the state legislature and city of Minneapolis in May.ESPN1500.com reported that the NFL likes to see a team host a "major event" in its venue prior to hosting a Super Bowl to test how a bigger operation would work at the site. Bagley told the website the next step will be to meet with the new stadium authority and assemble a Super Bowl committee. Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
