Duron Carter's chances of making the Minnesota Vikings seemed slight, even with his famous last name. Carter the son of newly-elected Hall of Famer and the leading receiver in Minnesota franchise history, Cris Carter was one of over 60 players at the Vikings' rookie minicamp this season and one of 34 players on a tryout basis. Carter, who acknowledged his "checkered" past after becoming academically ineligible at Ohio State followed by stops at three other schools, will not be offered a contract by Minnesota, according to a report by Pro Football Talk on Monday. PFT reported Carter won't sign "per a source with knowledge of the situation." Carter, a 6-foot-4 receiver, had a slow start to the minicamp on Friday, making the likelihood he'd flash enough to sign a deal doubtful. "I was kind of nervous out there," Carter said Friday. "I dropped my first three balls. I got back into it, hopefully I can get more. I'm about to go to the Juggs machine right now and just get better." Like his famous father, Carter started his collegiate career at Ohio State, Cris' alma mater. Duron had 13 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown in his first season, but that's where the fairy tale part of Duron's story takes a turn. He became academically ineligible at Ohio State and transferred to Coffeyville Community College where he had 44 catches for 690 yards and 10 touchdowns. He later spent time at Alabama and Florida Atlantic, but never played football at either school. The Vikings still called after the draft and offered Carter a tryout. Though nothing was promised, Carter turned down a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens as well. "This is the dream, to play in the NFL," Carter said. "So as hard as I can, this is my dream, this is my one chance to get it, so I'm going to go get it." Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
