After Sunday’s 27-20 win over Buffalo — in which the Jets committed a franchise-record 20 penalties — coach Rex Ryan is implementing a form of public shaming during practices to help reduce the team's momentum-killing infractions. Ryan won't be slapping a scarlet "P" on anyone's chest, but whenever a player commits a penalty, anybody and everybody observing practice must drop down for 10 push-ups — while the offending player watches. "I do not want our team associated with penalties," the Jets coach said Monday, a day after his team pulled off the win despite having the flag thrown at them  20 times. "That's not who we are." But it is and, at that penalty rate, the practice push-ups might give Ryan's players the best delts and traps in the league. After the first three games, the Jets lead the league in penalties with 34, thanks to four calls apiece Sunday on left guard Vladimir Ducasse and cornerback Kyle Wilson. Ryan believes he has  "a good plan" to eliminate those penalties with the same push-up tactic he employed in 2010. When a penalty flag is thrown in practice, everyone hits the ground — except the guilty party. Even team owner Woody Johnson will drop and do ten. "Hey, Woody knocks those things out pretty good," Ryan. "I’m the one that struggles. I’ve got the strings for arms. I want the player to stand up. He doesn’t do them. And I want him to notice who he’s affecting. He’s affecting all of us.  After you’ve done a few of those, you’re like, 'Really? You got a penalty again?' They’ll get on each other. There’s a little bit of accountability, especially if you look over and the owner is knocking them out. We don’t want to look like Jack LaLanne or somebody either." Looking like the late health guru might not be so bad Rex.

Rex Ryan forces New York Jets to relive their high school pushup nightmares

Remember high school gym class? Remember how if you failed to pay attention or if you spoke out of turn, your gym coach would tell you to get down on the ground and do 10 pushups. If you acted out a lot, there’s a good chance you were pretty humiliated quite often. But you also probably ended the year with a massive chest and decent guns. Well, according to the guys in the...

Initial Reaction – New York Jets Stuff Stat Sheet, Move To 2-1

If you have been watching the New York Jets for a prolonged period of time, you know certain statistical days rarely happen. 300 yard passers. 100 yard receivers. 100 yard rushers. 5+ sacks in a single game…these things just don’t happen all that often. 20 penalties? Now that sounds a little more believable. Today, the Jets beat the Buffalo Bills 27-20. They probably should...

Geno Smith heading in right direction for Jets

Geno Smith has had an up-and-down first three games of his NFL career. And, the New York Jets are OK with that. The rookie quarterback has made big plays in each of the team's wins in a surprising 2-1 start. He vows to cut down on his mistakes - six interceptions - and the Jets appear willing to live with them, especially with Mark Sanchez out until midseason. Smith has impressed...

Same Story Different Day: Geno Smith Versus 2009 Mark Sanchez

Let me say something that many people, including great football minds, did not think they would hear. The New York Jets are 2-1.In reality, they could be 3-0 if they protected the ball against the New England Patriots in Week 2.But, something tells me that the team is content with their record. It does not matter who they played or how ugly the wins have been, the team is playing...

It Was All Yellow...

East Rutherford, N.J. - At halftime I tweeted that New York was playing a clean game...things certainly took a dirty turn in the second half. You'd have to look all the way back to 1987 to find a game where the Jets had as many penalty yards as they had tonight. In total they had 168 penalty yards on 20 penalties. Holy moley. But somehow they pulled off the 27-20 win.Early on...

Week 4 Waiver Wire 'n' Flier's

QB Geno Smith: Geno is coming out of week 3 having just put up 345 total yards and 3 total td’s. This week he faces the Titans and Tennessee has been pretty good against qb’s this year, but with the versatile Bilal Powell in the backfield and the emergence of Santonio Holmes, Geno has a good opportunity for continued success this week. The Jets defense should force additional...

My recap: Bills lose to the Jets, 27-20

This always happens with the Jets. I swear. Maybe it is my hatred towards their fan base and just having to live in enemy territory that makes me want to really beat down Gang Green. Just every time I feel confident heading into a Bills/Jets game, they just spank the **** out of us. I never pick the Bills to win games unless they are against a Florida team or Cleveland. So, when...

Jets owner Woody Johnson does 'penalty' pushups at practice

On Monday, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan reinstituted the policy of the entire team doing 10 push-ups every time a penalty is committed in practice with the offending player standing and watching. And that included everyone who was there — no matter what your title. The coach stuck to his guns and even members of the organization standing on the sidelines felt the wrath of Rex...
