If anyone is curious, it appears that Mark Sanchez will be with the Jets for the 2013. In fact, he is not only going to be on the team, is in the lead to be the team’s starting quarterback.
According to the NY Daily News, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that Sanchez will take “the first snap” when training camp rolls around in the summer. He did not say that Sanchez would be the starter for game one of the regular season and reiterated that there will be competition at the quarterback position.
“I look at it this way: The competition’s the big thing,” Ryan said on Tuesday at the league meetings. “There is going to be competition at that position. There is no doubt. A leg up? Somebody has to take the first snap (in the offseason/training camp). So that’s kind of how I look at it. But there is definitely competition at that spot. The first snap, he’ll [Sanchez] be the guy running out there first.”
Right now, the Jets currently have Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and of course; Tim Tebow. Although Tebow is on the roster and was the fan favorite to take Sanchez’s spot last year, all indications point to Tebow being released before the start of next season.
It is surprising to hear that Sanchez has the “leg up” right now because of his immense struggles last season. He committed 26 turnovers and finished with a 66.9 QB rating. His completion percentage was a dismal 54.3 percent and he had five less touchdowns (13) than he had interceptions (18).
Garrard was brought in to bring some depth to the position and McElroy, who replaced Sanchez in a Week 13 win over the Cardinals, will be fighting for the starting quarterback spot; for now. Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb was released last week and it has been rumored that the Jets would go after Kolb in free agency.
Kolb could be a good fit as he and new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg were together in Philadelphia. Ryan however did his best to avoid the topic on Tuesday simply stating “If we think that will help the competition, then I’m sure it’ll be something we’ll look into.”
