Jerry Rice landed a job at ESPN as an analyst on Monday, and he’s quickly trying to make a name for himself, as he’s coming out and speaking about the recent retirement of Randy Moss.
Here’s what Rice had to say about Moss when it came to taking plays off and what not.
“It was hard for me to swallow because I was not as talented and I had to work harder,” Rice said on ESPN Radio. “To see a guy with that much talent not give it 100 percent, it was almost like a little slap in the face. But Randy was Randy.” And if Moss HAD worked a little harder? “He could have been one of the greatest,” Rice said. “I don’t think he wanted to give it 100 percent. You never knew what you were going to get with Randy. Sometimes you’d get the unbelievable guy, the amazing guy. Other times you’d get the guy that took a couple plays off.”
Moss was a special player, that can’t be denied. It’s kind of odd though the timing of Rice stating his case for Moss taking plays off and that he didn’t give 100 percent.
We have seen guys like Tiki Barber and Emmit Smith take shots at current and former players in the broadcast booth and crash and burn in the process. There’s no doubt in my mind that Rice was the best WR in the history of the game, but how he’s going to use the microphone as a mouthpiece to make his opinions known is going to get old real quick if all he does is throw stones at those that challenged his records and legacy.
