U Mad Bro? Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has been called many things.  On the field, Optimus Prime is probably the most creative nickname labeled upon him while still fitting a G-rated category. Though a self-given moniker, the title was also earned by his handling of Megatron, the Detroit Loins’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who Sherman held to three catches and 46 yards (both season lows) in their 2012 week 8 matchup. Richard Sherman can be brash, aggressive and a blasting cap for volatile situations (Google ‘I’m better at life than you’).  However, off the field, there really is more to the guy than meets the eye. Saturday, July 6, 2013 is the official launch of Blanket Coverage, The Richard Sherman Family Foundation.  The purpose of Blanket Coverage is to provide support for children enrolled in Washington state schools between the grades of K-12.  It will help ensure that as many children as possible will be provided with proper school supplies and adequate clothing. Richard Sherman was robbed of a starting spot in the 2013 Pro Bowl. Photo: Elaine Thompson/AP The idea for the foundation was born from the struggles of Sherman’s own youth.  Growing up in Los Angeles, Calif., many of his friends and classmates lacked the proper school supplies necessary for their education. Despite the fact that countless parents in the area held down two jobs, they were still struggling to provide sufficient supplies and clothing due to economic struggles. During Saturday’s official launch dinner, a silent auction will be held to help raise funds for the foundation, featuring items such as Seahawks game worn gear and a Shawn Kemp autographed Sonics jersey. Then, on Sunday, July 7, 2013, a charity softball game will be held in Tacoma, Wash. with current and past NFL stars such as Russell Wilson, Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Terrell Owens in attendance to help raise awareness for the foundation. There is no doubt in my mind that on the field, Sherman will continue to have the ego and swagger that breeds love from the 12th man and hatred from pitiable sports commentators and professional wide receivers everywhere. However, it’s nice to see a young athlete trying to enact meaningful change through a cause they have a personal connection with, showing it means more to them than just a tax break.  My hat’s off to you, No. 25.
