Dropping back behind a beleaguered makeshift offensive line Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers enjoyed one of the finest games of his career on Sunday in beating the Dallas Cowboys 31-20 at Qualcomm Stadium. Amid the din of a “home” crowd of 68601 seemingly dominated by Cowboys blue Rivers had the fifth 400-yard game of his career going 35 of 42 for 401 yards and three touchdowns as the Chargers overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to even their record at 2-2. "It's big to get 2-2 ... that's huge" Rivers said. Running back Danny Woodhead had the first two-touchdown game of his career and Rivers connected with tight end Antonio Gates for a 56-yard score in the fourth quarter as the Chargers beat the Cowboys (2-2) for only the second time in six tries at Qualcomm. "Philip played lights out once again" said Chargers head coach Mike McCoy. "That's the way he can play. That's the guy we know he is." Rivers who entered the game with the league’s second-best passer rating clearly won the battle of elite quarterbacks. He connected with seven different receivers including 10 completions to Gates for 136 yards. Those were the most catches for Gates in a game since 2007. Vincent Brown caught six for 39 and Keenan Allen and Woodhead each had five catches. "I certainly feel in synch" Rivers said. "I feel a rhythm. I feel comfortable in the pocket. I feel comfortable in the offense and the way we're operating. You got to keep going play to play because that can change in one play with an interception or something. You've got to stick with it." Rivers' Dallas counterpart Tony Romo finished 26 for 36 for 245 yards and two touchdowns both to Dez Bryant. On the ground Ryan Mathews ran for a solid 67 yards on 19 carries while Woodhead added 32 yards. The Chargers defense limited Dallas' DeMarco Murray to 70 yards rushing after he ran for 175 last week against St. Louis.
