IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys' defensive backfield was arguably their weakest unit last season. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan didn't have enough talent for his aggressive scheme to be successful. But a couple of offseason additions have greatly improved the secondary. On Wednesday, Ryan shared his thoughts on what will likely be his two new starting cornerbacks. Brandon Carr, who spent the previous four seasons with the Chiefs, was given a five-year, 50.1 million contract in March to become the Cowboys' shutdown corner. Being the highest-paid cornerback during the free agency period, Carr has high expectations to meet. According to Ryan, Carr has exceeded those expectations. "He's actually better," Ryan said. "He's outstanding. I knew he was great, but the guy is special." Ryan added: "He shuts down everybody. He can cover anybody. He's got long arms, great length and hes a great person who works his tail off. He takes coaching, and Im really impressed with him." Carr's versatility is another reason Ryan likes the 26-year-old's potential in Dallas. Carr played right corner in Kansas City but has been working on the left side with the Cowboys. "It looks like hes a natural at left," Ryan said. After recovering from left wrist surgery, Morris Claiborne will be lining up at the other starting cornerback spot. Because he is still rehabbing, the sixth overall pick in this years draft hasnt been able to participate in OTAs, which prevented Ryan from giving a a full assessment. "Obviously, this guy's a unique talent," Ryan said. "We didn't move up in the draft to get a guy thats not going to play. We've got an outstanding guy here." Claiborne had his cast removed last week and has been wearing a removable brace since. He is scheduled to begin therapy in another week. However, he does not plan to practice until training camp begins in late July. Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
