The Pittsburgh Tribune Review is reporting that Ben Roethlisberger and James Harrison are willing to restructure their contracts to help the team out.  Roethlisberger and Harrison are two of the highest paid players on the team.  It would help the Steelers if these two guys restructured but their are some things to think about while doing it.

With Ben Roethlisberger it is no big deal.  He can push his money back and continue to play for this team for years.  Giving him some more guaranteed money down the line will not hurt this team.  He is going to be the quarterback for longer then his current contract lasts.

With Harrison though it will be a questionable move.  Harrison is about to turn 34 in May.  He has had 2 back surgeries and is taking much longer to heal then he used to.  He will be a Steeler this year because we would save next to nothing if he was released or traded but after this year the team will be able to let him go and not suffer as much for it.  If they were to renegotiate Harrison’s contract now they would be almost guaranteed to have to keep him next season even if his play decreases this year.  That would push more guaranteed money into next year and he would either have to renegotiate again or we would be eating a ton of salary if we let him go.

The Steelers while doing what they have to do are shooting themselves in the foot for future years.  By restructuring all these deals it just pushes the money back and causes a bigger cap headache down the line.  It is time to stop playing nice and trim the fat.  Take the little hit now do not cause this to go farther down the line.

Guys like Hines Ward, James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Larry Foote, Chris Kemoeatu(after June 1) and maybe even Casey Hampton either need to take a pay cut or be given their walking papers.  Making it worse in the future is not the answer.  The Steelers need to ask gusy like Willie Colon who has not played in 2 years to take a pay cut as well.  The organization has already made itself look bad this offseason.  Just get it over with now and we will not have to do this again next season.  It is worth the black eye this summer to not take the body punches for another year.
