We’ve seen some pretty radical proposed renovation plans for the Pontiac Silverdome — including one in 2011 that, in hopes of helping Detroit land an MLS franchise, called for a bi-level redevelopment that included a soccer field, concert hall and multi-purpose sports facility. There has been no movement on any of the ideas, however, since Toronto developer Andreas Apostolopoulos purchased the property for $550,000 in 2009. Recently, Mother Nature appears to have taken matters into her own hands. WXYZ in Detroit captured video footage Monday that showed the Silverdome roof missing huge chunks of its surface (as seen in the photo above. The Silverdome roof was deflated earlier in January, as part of some renovation plan — exactly what that plan was, the general public was never told. Silverdome officials told WXYZ this week that the impromptu roof demolition was not a surprise. We contacted Silverdome officials for comment. They say since they let the air out the roof has been tearing because of the wind and snow. They also say they expected tearing to happen. Cold temperatures and high winds have impacted the Detroit metro area in recent days — tens of thousands of people lost power on Saturday night, as a cold front moved into the area. That appears to be when the Silverdome took on this recent damage. The 80,000-seat stadium housed the Lions from 1975-2001, until Ford Field opened in downtown Detroit. Since then, the Silverdome has bounced between sitting vacant and hosting random events, like matches for the Detroit Mechanix of the American Ultimate Disc League (which, apparently, is a real thing). There’s no word on when the Silverdome roof may be repaired or the next stage of this mysterious renovation may begin.
