Third round pick Russell Wilson will start Friday’s pre-season game against the Kansas City Chiefs (Credit: AP Photo)

In a rather surprising move, the Seattle Seahawks have announced today, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter has confirmed, that third round pick Russell Wilson will start Friday’s pre-season game.

NFL coaches usually use Week Three of the preseason as a tune-up for their starters, so this decision suggests that Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is seriously considering making Wilson the starter when the regular season begins.

Matt Flynn has been the favorite to win the quarterback derby in Seattle all along, but Wilson has played well enough in the preseason to make the competition close. If Wilson has a big game playing with the Seahawks’ starters against the Chiefs’ starters, it’s entirely possible that Wilson will join Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden and become the NFL’s fifth rookie starting quarterback.

So far, this pre-season Russell Wilson is 22 for 33 for 279 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception.

QB or not QB, That Is the Question

Louis Bacigalupi posts comments on Seahawk Addicts under the name LouieLouie.  He's an accountant by trade and worked in a USFL front office.  He can be reached by email at Louie@fiercelyi.com. Someone has to say it, so it might as well be me:  the Seahawks have their quarterback of the future, and his name is Russell Wilson.  There, I’ve said it and I feel much better...

Tavaris Jackson is on the chopping block

According to published reports, the Seahawks are looking to trade Tavaris Jackson, also known as the quarterback that Bret Favre replaced in Minnesota.Frankly, this isn't a surprise. Seahawks, Chiefs prepared to meet in preseason

The third preseason game is when NFL coaches generally give their starters the most playing time, turning it into a de facto dress rehearsal for the regular season. Is the rookie starting quarterback trend getting out of control?

Between 1970 and 2005, an average of 1.4 rookie quarterbacks per year started at least eight games. Since then, that number has increased to 2.7. And if Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson hit that mark this season, that number would increase to 3.1. In other words, twice as many rookie quarterbacks are becoming prominent...
