Yesterday Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote an article about LaMarr Woodley. In the article an unnamed Steelers player was quoted as saying the following: “He was awful,” the teammate said of Woodley to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He tells us he works out, but we didn’t see it. He wasn’t in shape. That has to be a reason why he was always hurt.” There was some speculation that these comments were not true and may have been made up by Cook or someone else. Well if they were made up then the people responsible have just opened up a very big can of worms when it comes to the Steelers off-season. However, with Ryan Clark’s comments today there is another issue the team will have to deal with altogether. “My biggest problem with that is not LaMarr, or is not someone’s feelings about LaMarr,” Clark said. “My problem is now it’s public. We were talking about the Ravens earlier, we were talking about the brotherhood, we were talking about the family that they were. We all have arguments with our brothers, sisters, cousins, but that stays in-house. What you talk about then stays there and it doesn’t get out to the public. So that is the problem. … “That shows that this team that is normally close, you had the Joey Porters, the Alan Fanecas, just down the line, leader after leader, this team was close-knit. It shows there is a fracture in that. I think that is the most disappointing thing about that coming out.” Now Clark is saying one of two things. He could be saying that the player that made those comments is a fracture in the group. The other thing Clark could be saying is that the Steelers are lacking leadership and are no longer a band of brothers on the field. Either wat the Steelers have some issues that they will need to work out this off-season. In the past eight years the Steelers have said goodbye to many leaders including Jerome Bettis, Joey Porter, Alan Faneca, Chris Hope, James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Jeff Hartings, Marvel Smith, Willie Parker, Dan Kreider, Clark Haggans, William Gay and Hines Ward. Some of these players have been replaced, but others have yet to be replaced and the level of leadership on the team doesn’t seem to be where it was. Take a look back at the 2005-2006 team that came together to win their final eight games including Super Bowl XL. That team was head to toe filled with leadership, but the team in 2012, and a few teams since, seem to lack that leadership. Many will want to blame that on the coaching staff, but it is up to the players to fill those roles. When guys like Hines Ward and Jerome Bettis leave a team someone has to step up and take over their leadership roles. As the Steelers move toward the 2013 season they need to find a way to replace the leaders they have lost and those they may lose this off-season. With the Steelers salary cap issues the team may have to cut Brett Keisel, James Harrison and Willie Colon this off-season and they may not be able to, or may chose not too, bring back Larry Foote and Casey Hampton. That means more long-time leaders are on their way out of Pittsburgh and it also means more players are going to have to step up and fill those roles. It’s time for guys like Ben Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey, and Antonio Brown to take control of the offense and Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu need to get the defense back on track off-the-field. If the Steelers are not as close-knit as they used to be then it is up to those guys to fix that. We all hear about Peyton Manning getting his teams together in the off-season to work out and do things together, but for anyone who follows multiple Steelers players on Twitter or Facebook knows that isn’t happening in Pittsburgh. It’s time for some leaders to step up or this team may struggle again in 2013. Ryan Clark Urged LaMarr Woodley All Season To Train With Him In Arizona

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark was quite a popular man on Monday as he was also a guest on the Dave Dameshek Football Program. Clark talked about several things related to the team and made it known that he texted linebacker LaMarr Woodley to see if he had read the Sunday report by Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that included a quote from an anonymous player stating...

Teammate Says LaMarr Woodley Was Out Of Shape & Awful Last Season

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley has been criticized heavily for his play the last few seasons and several think that he is spending too much time in the media spotlight than under the lights of a weight training room. Evidently a teammate of Woodley's thinks along those same lines, according to the latest piece by Ron Cook in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. ...

Clark Leads Hypocrisy Parade in the Steelers’ Locker Room

Maybe all the hits Ryan Clark has taken to the head have finally come full-circle. I find it amazing how he continues to defend some teammates yet is nowhere to be found when it comes to defending others. It’s becoming a never-ending trend for Clark and frankly it’s becoming nauseating. The Pittsburgh Steelers are starting to remind me more and more of a sad reality show and...

Could Vikings LB Erin Henderson Be A Cheap Free Agent Prospect For The Steelers?

Let me start of this post by saying that I will be very surprised if the Pittsburgh Steelers add a big name via free agency this offseason. It just isn't something that they normally do and being up against the salary cap this offseason won't help change that this offseason. Even experienced smaller name free agent additions would be quite surprising. With that disclaimer...

Time for Steelers to send Troy Polamalu packing?

As Pittsburgh Steelers fans wait to see what transpires to the Steelers roster during the offseason, and who gets picked in the draft, there will be much speculation to what might occur. The Steelers find themselves in a salary cap dilemma not easily fixable. Mainly, five Steelers hold the lion’s share of the cap money. They are Ben Roethlisberger, James Harrison, Lawrence Timmons...

NFL Teams can Place the Franchise Tag on Players Through March 4, but the Steelers Won’t be Using it This Year

Starting on Monday NFL teams could officially place the Franchise Tag on their own free agents. The deadline to use the tag is March fourth, but the Steelers won’t be using the tag this year. Pittsburgh has plenty of unrestricted free agents and would love to retain Keenan Lewis and they have expressed some interest in bringing back Mike Wallace. Those two players are the only...

Steelers Mike Adams Fine With Playing On Left Or Right Side In 2013

It was an up and down season for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie tackle Mike Adams, who had his year come crashing to a halt after injuring his ankle in the Week 12 game against the Cleveland Browns, but the Ohio State product is already looking forward to the 2013. Adams saw all of his playing time at right tackle in 2012 thanks to Marcus Gilbert being injured early on in the season...

Steelers S Ryan Clark Calls Comments Made By Anonymous Teammate Cowardly

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark made the news Monday morning when he said on NFL AM that the team might be fractured and not a close-nit group of players when commenting on the Sunday report by Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that quoted an anonymous player as saying linebacker LaMarr Woodley was out of shape last season and awful. Monday evening Clark was guest...

Steelers Salary Cap: Don’t Forget About Displacement When Considering Restricted Tenders

There has been a lot more discussion as of late about which of the Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agents may or may not be tendered over the course of the next few weeks and most of the concern seems to revolve around the cap space needed to do that. I still stand my prediction that the five primary restricted free agents: Emmanuel Sanders, Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer, Stevenson...

2012 Grade, Position by Position, Defensive Line

So, now we’ve come to the side of the ball where the Steelers’ bread is buttered. For years, the Steelers’ defense has instilled fear and respect in opponents. From the days of the Steel Curtain, through the years of Blitz-burgh and the Zone Blitz, to this latest incantation, defense has been the hallmark of Pittsburgh Steelers football. The most natural place to start this...

Foote says critiscm of Woodley broke the code

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Larry Foote can’t imagine that a teammate of his would come out and say that LaMarr Woodley was out of shape and awful this past season.  He believes it may be a coach. “I mean there have been fights in the locker room, there’s been stuff on the airplane that never got out and that’s the Steeler way,” said Foote on 93.7 The Fan, per SteelersDepot...

Teammate's jab at Woodley highlights deeper problem for the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers were in the rare position of sitting at home for the playoffs at the conclusion of the 2012 season, and the team has been questioned since they failed to make the postseason. The pressure on players and coaches in Pittsburgh is unlike most teams in the league. Making the playoffs is the expectation in Pittsburgh, not a happy surprise that comes around once...

It’s Still Time for Roethlisberger, Timmons, and Woodley to Lead the Steelers

After Ryan Clark’s comments on NFL AM this morning there are some big questions surrounding the Steelers camaraderie as well as the level of leadership on the team. This isn’t a new issue, however, before the 2012 season that was one of the issues that concerned me most. In fact, I wrote this article almost a year ago: Time for Roethlisberger, Timmons, and Woodley to Lead ...
