New Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson has already impressed with bold moves to remake the Colts roster in the draft and through free agency. Those moves were mostly based on talent evaluation, which fit closely with Grigson's background as a scout. Still some questioned his youth and whether that would effect his ability to wheel and deal with other GMs more seasoned than he.

Sunday's deal with the Miami Dolphins to acquire cornerback Vontae Davis should put those fears to rest. In Davis, Grigson was able to address the position of greatest need within the Colts roster and he was able to do so without giving up too much.

Davis is a former first round draft choice of the Dolphins who has started since day one. He's recorded nine career interceptions with Miami, including four last season. He's also played in a 3-4 scheme his entire career, so his learning curve with the Colts should be minimal.

Davis' presence dramatically upgrades a cornerback position that, outside of Jerraud Powers, was still filled with question marks after three exhibition games. Newcomers like DJ Johnson have stepped up and played well, but none bring the proven big play ability that Davis does. He should be ready to start opposite Powers when the Colts open up the regular season in Chicago.

To get Davis, the Colts gave up a second round draft choice and a conditional pick in next year's draft. A player with Davis' talent wouldn't be available with that second round pick, so the value of the pick would appear to be in the Colts' favor.

So far in three games, the opposition's tendency to throw away from Jerraud Powers side of the field has been striking. It's clear the Colts' opponents have noticed a discrepancy in talent level as well. Davis' presence now gives the Colts' capable cover corners on either side and allows whomever among Johnson, Justin King, Cassius Vaughn and the others competing for roster spots to play in a nickel back role where they're better suited.
