The San Diego Chargers placed safety Bob Sanders on injured reserve with a knee injury, officially ending his eighth NFL season after just two games.
This marks the fourth consecutive season that Sanders has been placed on IR. Out of a possible 128 regular season games, he has played in exactly 50 of them (39.06 percent), and just twice did he top six games played in a single season.
His injury problems have been growing much, much worse recently as well.
Over the past four seasons, he has played in 11 games and missed 53 due to injury. That’s an unbelievable amount of time to spend on the injured reserve.
Sanders was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2005 and again in 2007, when he earned the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award and helped the Colts surrender just 247 points (a league-low).
But he’s now 30 years old and given his fourth consecutive season-ending injury, I would be surprised if he ever played again in the NFL.
