Quarterback Billy Volek has spent the last five seasons with the San Diego Chargers as the backup to Philip Rivers–even though the team has never really needed to use him. Over the weekend, the Chargers made sure Volek will be around just in case anything were to happen to Rivers during the 2011 season. According to Scott Bair of the North County Times, San Diego inked Volek to a two-year deal on Saturday worth $6 million–with $2.5 million guaranteed. Volek will be entering his 13th NFL season in 2011 and has proven to be an effective quarterback when needed–especially when the Chargers needed him in the 2008 playoffs after Rivers left against the Indianapolis Colts with an ACL tear. It may have been seven years ago, but Volek displayed some impressive performances when he started eight games for the Tennessee Titans back in 2008–including back-to-back games with 400+ passing yards and four touchdowns.
