The San Francisco 49ers are in for a challenge tomorrow afternoon at Candlestick Park.  The Niners are an old school team that wins by running the ball and playing defense.  They are built to win on any kind of field regardless of weather.  The Saints on the other hand, are a team that wins by outscoring their opponent with a high powered offense.  But, the Saints are nowhere near as good of a team on the road as they are at home in the SuperDome.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game: When the 49ers have the ball:  The 49ers are going to tighten their chinstraps and try to run the ball right down the Saints’ throats tomorrow with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter leading the way.  They should have success running the ball as the O-Line is nasty in attack mode.  If the Niners are successful running the ball, they should be able to hit some passes off play action.  WR Michael Crabtree and TE Vernon Davis are likely going to be the Niners’ top targets in the passing gam...

Tell me you weren’t shocked when Alex Smith drove the San Francisco 49ers down the field for the go ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter? Really…you weren’t shocked? Well what about when he did it the second time? The first quarter of the New Orleans Saints vs. the San Francisco 49ers was the personification of Murphy’s Law. I had to check the calendar and...

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will play in his first playoff game Saturday against the New Orleans Saints. Can he match the playoff heroics of past stars Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia?

Sunday Playoff Predictions

So that 49ers/Saints bout was amazing! I haven’t seen a game that good in a opossums’ age. I was wrong on the outcome but I was right that it would be a good one. The Niners brought the hard hitting and the Saints brought the high flying but in the end it was Alex Smith and Vernon Davis that made the difference. I didn’t think Smith had it in him but he certainly...

Saints get knocked out by 49ers, 36-32

Drew Brees overcame five New Orleans turnovers and a 17-point deficit to put the Saints on the brink of their first road playoff victory in franchise history. He could only watch as Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers stole it away in the closing seconds, ending the Saints' chances at another Super Bowl run. Brees capped his record-setting season by throwing for 462 yards...

Who’s Got It Better

The 49ers showed they belong in the conversation with the best teams in the league with a thrilling 36-32 victory yesterday. Some might even call the game a shootout, which barely anyone would expect the 49ers to be able to even manage, let alone pull out a victory against New Orleans. The Saints have one of the highest powered, explosive offenses the NFL has ever seen. Quarterback...

Alex Smith delivers a dagger to the heart

The heir to "The Catch" deserves a stronger nickname than any the 49ers could dream up on Saturday night. "The Throw?" coach Jim Harbaugh ventured. "The Throw and Catch?" "The Grab," offered Vernon Davis, the man who...

One great game; one great letdown

One of the greatest football fourth quarters ever ended spectacularly Saturday — not when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith connected with tight end Vernon Davis for the game-winning touchdown, but just after. Davis, a huge, tough man, took off his helmet and burst into tears of joy, tears that betrayed how hard he and his teammates had worked to get to this point...

Special teams come through with big plays

SAN FRANCISCO – Jim Harbaugh's first words following the 49ers' first playoff win in nine seasons were for last-second heroes Alex Smith and Vernon Davis.
