The San Francisco 49ers got an improbable win over the Saints in the final minute last weekend as Alex Smith turned in a Montana like effort.  He might have to do that again this Sunday as the Giants looked pretty damn good in thumping the Packers at Lambeau Field last weekend.  Here is a look at the matchups in the NFC Championship Game: When the 49ers have the ball:  The 49ers are going to come out running the ball with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter in this game.  They should have success on the ground as the Giants are a little soft in the middle and at linebacker.  The Niners need to establish a good running game to A.) keep the clock moving, B.) slow the Giants pass rush and C.) keep the Giants offense on the sideline.  If the Niners are forced to be one dimensional by throwing the ball in this game, QB Alex Smith is going to get battered and bruised.  The Niners have had protection issues at times this year, but for Smith to have a chance to make some big plays down the field&...

Alex Smith to Vernon Davis – “The Catch III”

Our Chalk Talk series helps to understand the art of football. It breaks down the technique and scheme of various football plays.   The NFC Divisional Round playoff game between the Saints and 49ers is one of the great NFL games I’ve ever witnessed. Four Minutes Change Everything for Alex Smith

All year long, there was one big question about the San Francisco 49ers. No matter how well their defense played, people wondered if Alex Smith was a good enough quarterback to lead them deep into the playoffs. No matter how well the 49ers ran the ball, people wondered if Smith would eventually be their downfall. No matter how good a job Smith did of protecting the ball and putting...

Giants Center David Baas ‘Always Believed’ in Alex Smith

Giants center David Baas was drafted by the 49ers in 2005 and played six seasons for the club before signing in New York this offseason. Baas was part of the same draft class as quarterback Alex Smith, who was taken first overall by San Francisco (Baas was the first pick of the second round). After playing six seasons with Smith, Baas says he always believed in the Utah quarterback...

Signs You're a Bandwagon 49ers Fan

What with the stirring, stunning and ultimately stimulating football contest Saturday, it'd be hard not to be whipped up into a fresh frenzy for your San Francisco 49ers, who host the New York football Giants on Sunday for the right to compete in the Super Bowl. But chances are many of the hooting and hollering fans bedecked in fresh red and gold duds have never ventured out...

Sunday Playoff Predictions

So that 49ers/Saints bout was amazing! I haven’t seen a game that good in a opossums’ age. I was wrong on the outcome but I was right that it would be a good one. The Niners brought the hard hitting and the Saints brought the high flying but in the end it was Alex Smith and Vernon Davis that made the difference. I didn’t think Smith had it in him but he certainly...

Who’s Got It Better

The 49ers showed they belong in the conversation with the best teams in the league with a thrilling 36-32 victory yesterday. Some might even call the game a shootout, which barely anyone would expect the 49ers to be able to even manage, let alone pull out a victory against New Orleans. The Saints have one of the highest powered, explosive offenses the NFL has ever seen. Quarterback...

We’ve reached the AFC and NFC Championship round, which leaves four starting quarterbacks left playing. Each guy is distinctly different, and each guy has a plethora of YouTube Tribute Videos. 49ers, Giants, Ravens and Patriots Advance

Late-game heroics, stingy defenses and blowouts highlighted this weekend's divisional playoff matchups. 49ers beat Saints 36-32 The Saints haven’t lost a game since the day before Halloween, but a four touchdown night from quarterback Alex Smith and 180 yards receiving from Vernon Davis was downright scary. While Drew Brees (458 passing yards, four TDs) had success against...
