ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz found some vintage irony in this perceived feud with the Green Bay Packers. It all goes back to what he insists was an innocent comment during the offseason. "We had no sporting clays today or no amusement parks or water parks," Schwartz said after a mini-camp practice last month. Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy took exception to the quote because he felt it was a shot at the Packers for going skeet shooting during a team event. During a radio interview, McCarthy said, "I don't know what the problem with skeet shooting is. I thought that was probably one of the best events we've ever had here. "... We have a lot of confidence in the way we run our program, and we're always trying to make it better. And I think skeet shooting is going to be the difference in us getting back to the Super Bowl. So there." Schwartz got a chuckle out of how his words were interpreted. He insisted they had "nothing to do with any other team." "You know what was really funny on that little story," Schwartz said following Tuesday's training-camp practice. "The day that that article came out (about McCarthy's response), you know what I was doing? "Skeet shooting," he said. "I thought that was a funny thing." This wasn't the first war-of-words exchange between the NFC North rivals this summer. A few weeks ago, Packers receiver Greg Jennings questioned whether the Lions have the maturity to "maintain their composure, both on the field and off the field" during the course of a full season. Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch didn't appreciate Jennings' take and wrote the following message on Twitter: "Who is Greg Jennings to talk about the Lions? The guy should worry about his own team." The Packers have won 12 of the last 13 against the Lions, including last Thanksgiving when Detroit defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh got ejected for a foot stomp on Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. The first of two meetings between the teams this season will be Nov. 18 at Ford Field in Detroit. May the best skeet shooter win.
