Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Flynn did not play Friday's 44-14 exhibition victory at the Kansas City Chiefs because of an elbow injury, according to the Seattle Times.

However, it is not known what the severity of the injury is or how it happened.

"It surprised him and it surprised us," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. "He couldn't throw well enough to play."

The Seahawks plan to use Russell Wilson with the starters in practice next week and Flynn with the second unit. Flynn did not practice on Wednesday because of a tired arm. He was scheduled to play Friday behind Wilson but was pulled during pregame warmups.

"He did improve a little bit from when it first flared up," Carroll said. "We thought he would be able to throw again and play. He thought so, too, but when he got out there, he just couldn't."

Carroll added that Flynn's injury is tendinitis-related but the team does not know any more than that.

"He didn't hurt it at any one time," Carroll said. "He didn't get hit or anything like that. It just kind of developed. We just have to wait it out and see what happens."

The Seahawks signed Flynn in March after playing with the Green Bay Packers for four years.
