Yesterday Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and New York Jets corner Darrelle Revis ignited a feud via Twitter arguing about who exactly is the league’s best cornerback. Revis was the first to take to Twitter by responding to recent comments by Sherman saying, “I’ve never seen a man before run his mouth so much like a girl,” and “This dude just steady putting my name in his mouth to get notoriety. Sit down young pup and wait your turn.” Sherman responded by saying, “Don’t need ya name… Ur name will be irrelevant once you step back on the field bruh. Get ya picks up!” In a later tweet wednesday Sherman perpetuated the issue by stating “One season you will get 8 picks… But it won’t happen anytime soon… I did it in my second season… So you have something to chase. Got off my flight to this hilarious convo. So I have 8 picks and 3 ff and a sack. My season stats looking like Revis career stats.” For reference Sherman’s stats in his 2 years in the league look like this: 12 interceptions, 41 passes defended, 4 forced fumbles (1 recovered), and a sack. Revis’ career numbers in 6 seasons are as follows: 19 interceptions, 98 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles (5 recovered), and a sack. By the looks of these numbers Sherman may have a point. In 4 less seasons Sherman is only 7 picks behind Revis and has 1 more forced fumble. While Revis has 57 more passes defended, if you average out the 98 total PDs of Revis over his 6 years, you would get only about 16 a year. Sherman averages 20 PDs per year in his 2 seasons thus far. Now that statistic may be skewed by the fact that Revis has long been thought of as the best corner in the league and as a result teams try to avoid throwing to his side of the field, resulting in less opportunities to break up passes thrown his way. Sherman however, may get to that level if he continues his strong play. The entire Twitter war was presumably started when Sherman took to the streets of New Orleans during Super Bowl week to ask people if they thought he or Revis was the league’s best corner. Still recovering from ACL surgery, Revis did not take kindly to the comparison as he was not able to demonstrate his ability on the field. Only time will tell if Sherman can supplant Revis as the best cornerback of popular opinion, but if he keeps playing at the level he has his first 2 years in the league, Revis will be hard pressed to hold him off for long.
