Miami Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith was preparing for life under the franchise tag while "rooting strongly against it," according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.Apparently, Smith has nothing to worry about in that regard. The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reported Monday that the Dolphins "will NOT use their tag on Sean Smith. Period."That's the right move. Smith, slated to hit free agency in March, is reportedly looking for a new contract in the ballpark of $8-10 million a year. Unfortunately for Smith, he's not worth that.If the Dolphins tagged Smith, they'd have to pay him close to $11 million in 2013. He's not worth that, either. Miami is better off letting him test the market if he doesn't want to extend his stay with the Dolphins for a reasonable price.George Bremer of The Herald Bulletin suggested the Colts, who traded for Smith's former cross-field colleague Vontae Davis last year, could make a run at Smith. That's ...

Indianapolis Colts: Looking ahead to free-agency, part I
The Indianapolis Colts had a highly successful 2012 season, to be sure. The team, led by a rookie quarterback and filled with inexperienced and cast-off players, won 11 games and made the playoffs one year removed from a 2-14 season.
However, like any team, there is room for improvement. And, in the NFL, improvement comes in the form of roster moves/changes. This two-part post...
Jake Long on return to Dolphins: “it’s essentially on them”
The clock is ticking on the Miami Dolphins relationship with their former #1 overall pick, Jake Long. The Dolphins must decide before March 4th if they want to use their franchise tag on Long, resign him, or let him enter free agency on March 12th. First, I don’t see anyway that the Dolphins use the franchise tag on Long, as it would pay him over $15 million in 2013. So cross...
Indianapolis Colts: Comparing Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning, final version
Indianapolis Colts fans are fortunate, if early indications are a true preview of future returns.
No matter which way you slice it, Andrew Luck’s rookie season outpaces that of the then-record setting rookie season by former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. And as I have stated all along, this has been with a smaller pool of talent than what Manning had his first go-around (mainly...
Dwight Freeney's post-Indianapolis options limited
With the announcement that Dwight Freeney won't be re-signed by the Indianapolis Colts, the veteran defensive end will be heading into free agency for the first time. With just 12 tackles and five sacks last season, Freeney may have a difficult time finding work with agreeable pay.
For Freeney, playing in a 4-3 defense is essential. He didn't fit in the Colts' new...
Dolphins Won't Use Franchise Tag On CB Sean Smith
The Miami Dolphins are no closer to a long-term contract deal with cornerback Sean Smith, but don't hold your breath for the team to seal the deal.
Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald reported Monday the Dolphins will not tag Smith, despite what many believed would transpire in South Beach.
Local papers reported Smith was a top candidate for the roughly $10.7 million tag...
Peter King: League buzzing over Dwight Freeney
According to Peter King of SI.com, the NFL has been “buzzing” since the Colts told defensive end Dwight Freeney they won’t be re-signing him this offseason.
I think the Dwight Freeney release had the league buzzing over the weekend. One GM who was very interested already in former Giant pass rusher Osi Umenyiora told me Freeney would leapfrog Umenyiora on his free-agent board...
Dolphins OT Jake Long Likely To Test The Open Market
Dolphins free agent-to-be LT Jake Long mentioned that the ball is in the Miami’s court in regards to whether or not he’ll be back next season.
“We’re going to have to see,” Long said when asked if he’d remain in Miami, via NFL.com. ”I’d be open to continue my career there, but it’s essentially on them, see what they want to do and what direction they want to head...
Is Dwight Freeney a fit for Falcons?
Dwight Freeney had a disappointing season in 2012 with the Indianapolis Colts. Freeney had just 5 sacks and 12 tackles in 14 games last season but was hampered by an ankle injury that lingered during the season. He also didn't seem to be a good fit with the 3-4 defense that the Colts made the switch to in 2012. Even with a poor 2012, Freeney has averaged eight sacks per season...
Indianapolis Colts: Deconstruction of a Champion to a New Era
With franchise-sack leader Dwight Freeney on his way out of Indianapolis, the Colts move a step closer to a complete rebuild from their Super Bowl teams. Scott Kacsmar examines the era-changing process.
NFL Rumor: Miami QB Matt Moore to test free agent market; Norv Turner a fan
Buried at the bottom of this Miami Herald piece is a tidbit that Browns fans may find interesting. Barry Jackson writes-
“Several Dolphins people, including Ryan Tannehill, have reached out to Matt Moore, hoping he will re-sign. Keep in mind that Cleveland offensive coordinator Norv Turner is a big fan of Moore, who will test free agency to see if there’s a starting job available...
Miami Dolphins: Team Needs in the 2013 NFL Draft
As we continue the Team Needs series for the 2013 NFL Draft, we proceed to the team with the twelfth overall pick; the Miami Dolphins. Unlike most offseasons the past decade for the Dolphins, things finally feel like they’re headed in the right direction. A big part of this has to do with the feeling that a quarterback they drafted finally appears like he’ll work out.
First...
Dwight Freeney: New York Jets a Great Fit For Former Colts Stud
New York Jets fans, Dwight Freeney was recently cut by the Indianapolis Colts after 11 seasons and 107.5 sacks. He is the edge pass-rusher the Jets have never had in the Rex Ryan era! When looking at Freeney, think Michael Strahan, more on that thought in a moment. The Jets have tried and missed on previous edge rushers in the way of Calvin Pace, who in essentially the same number...
After Triceps Surgery, Dolphins OT Jake Long Not Sure He'll Remain In Miami
Dr. James Andrews surgically repaired Jake Long's torn left triceps this winter, and the Miami Dolphins left tackle says his best years of football are ahead of him as he enters free agency.
The No. 1 overall pick of the 2008 draft won't say if he's optimistic those years will be spent in Miami.
"You've got to talk to my agent about that one," Long...
Sources say Dolphins will target WR Mike Wallace
The Miami Dolphins are poised to go on a bit of a shopping spree, once the March 12th Free Agency period opens. As of this moment, the Dolphins have roughly $45 million to spend on resigning their own free agents and acquiring free agents that will hit the market on March 12th. We can only guess as to what the Dolphins plan for the upcoming offseason will be, but we are beginning...
