No Game Balls This Week Last time I had the unfortunate responsibility of doing ‘What Went Wrong’, the first line was ‘Hey! Only 5 penalties!’  Well this time, I’m leading off with this: 5 drops. 5 freakin’ drops. Unacceptable!  So frustrating to watch, and frustrating for the Seahawks rookie QB Russell Wilson to have happen.  Tough game, tough team, hostile environment (safety wise, not noise wise). Catch the Damn Ball! On the Seahawks opening drive, Russell Wilson went deep to Robert Turbin on a wheel-route on third and short from the 49ers 34. Turbin utilized a perfect pick courtesy of Zach Miller to beat his man and get wide open. And he dropped it on the 49ers four yard line. The Seahawks settled for a field goal, but that set the tone for the rest of the game. Whether it was a Braylon Edwards drop in the endzone or Evan Moore deep, or Marshawn Lynch out in the flat, or, (this one hurts), Golden Tate on third and short, the receivers couldn’t catch the damn ball. The biggest one came on another third and short. Russell Wilson went to Golden Tate on a slant route. Perfectly thrown. Perfectly placed. Would’ve been a first down. And he dropped it. The Seahawks punted and the 49ers marched 88-yards for a touchdown. Ouch. It’s pretty bad when the best thing to write about was the game by the punter Jon Ryan. Where have we seen this before? Three times Frank Gore ran a cutback behind the right guard Alex Boone. And three times it went for huge chunks of yardages. Even when Kendall Hunter checked into the game, the usually dominant Seahawks defense couldn’t stop him. When Gore and Hunter combine f0r 20+ carries, the 49ers are 17-0. Yesterday they combined for 25. The Seahawks have struggled in tackling recently as well. Last week it was All-Pro Earl Thomas who apparently forgot how to wrap up. This week, KJ Wright basically gave up extra yardage several times by shoving players rather than making a tackle. The defense is the strength, and despite holding the 49ers to 13 points, they can be better than they showed the nation on Thursday night. Special Special Teams? One thing that is a staple of Pete Carroll teams is winning the field position battle. Be it punt coverage or kickoff coverage, the Seahawks always are high up in the league. And Jon Ryan did it again on Thursday night, booting kick after kick (including a mammoth 64-yarder) but he was over kicking his coverage. Ted Ginn was allowed the middle of the field too many times. The 49ers started drives near midfield more than once and it led to points on the board. Leon Washington is rusty. When he needs to set up the offense with great field position, like before the final offensive drive, he panics and runs backwards and laterally instead of heading up field. And the poor field position ended up costing us the game because of a questionable penalty in the endzone, resulting in a safety (even though San Francisco declined the penalty). The Seahawks (and hopefully Game Balls) return on the 28th against the Detroit Lions. Stay tuned to NWSB for continued coverage!
