BEREA, Ohio Pat Shurmur was asked several different ways if he saw any progress against the Ravens on Sunday. "I saw some things we did well," Shurmur said. "I'll keep that for a further conversation. "You want constant progress, but it hasn't shown up," he said. "We have progress to make. At this point in the season, you want to make progress." Shurmur didn't mention that the Browns won the coin toss for the first time this season in his 18-minute briefing with the media. That's at least some progress. Shurmur feels there is light at the end of the tunnel, despite finishing the season with two games with the Steelers and one with the Ravens and Cardinals. "It's just like everything you do and you just keep pushing and it will turn when you don't expect it," he said. "I've been around teams that have won. I think we have some good young players that have played well and have gotten playing time and we're building with." Shurmur was asked on what specific progress he saw and he caught a reporter rolling their eyes and ended the session within a couple of minutes. "I saw some eyes roll in here," Shurmur said. Shurmur said he didn't notice how empty the stadium was near the end of Sunday's game, but vows things will turn around. "I understand why that happens," Shurmur said. "It was raining. I don't lose faith. We're busting our fanny to get things right and we will. "I think these guys want to do what it takes to win and are forging ahead to do what it takes." For the Browns to be successful, they are going to have to compete with teams in the AFC North. Shurmur was asked if he thinks there is a wide gap between the Browns and the rest of the division. "The one game at a time comes to mind right now and we get a chance to play (Baltimore) again," he said. "Based on last night's performance against Baltimore, yes, but it's never as bad as you think it is." Shurmur was asked if he's still encouraged despite the 4-8 record. "I'm still excited to lead these guys excited and energized about what lies ahead," Shurmur said. "I'm not discouraged one bit." Notebook Ward, Spears Out: Shurmur ruled DB T.J. Ward (foot) and LB Quinton Spears (hamstring) out for Thursday's game with the Steelers. RB Peyton Hillis suffered a left hip strain and is day to day. QB Colt McCoy suffered a knee sprain and is day to day. "(Hillis') sore and we'll see how he does in the few hours we have." Not Special: Shurmur defended the special teams and first year coach Chris Tabor said. "We've had things happen during special teams," Shurmur said. "Chris is a fine coach. We just have to find ways to be more productive." The Browns gave up a 68-yard punt return for a touchdown against the Ravens. Earlier this season the Browns have given up a kickoff return for a touchdown, a fake field goal for a touchdown and have had two bad snaps on field goal attempts and two blocked field goals. McCoy 23rd: QB Colt McCoy is ranked 23rd among starting NFL quarterbacks with a 76.9 rating. He was 17-of-35 for 192 yards with a touchdown and an interception and a rating of 63.0. He was sacked three times. Shurmur was asked about McCoy's performance. "He battled. He battled," he said. "I think every player you see needs to be more consistent from the first snap to the last and that comes by eliminating the errors. That could be all the players, not just Colt." McCoy wasn't helped by several dropped passes again. The Browns lead the league in dropped passes. "We can't drop balls," Shurmur said. "That's unacceptable." Browns Dropping: After giving up 290 yards rushing against the Ravens, the Browns have now dropped to 31st in rushing defense. "We let them have some explosive runs and there were times they picked away at us," Shurmur said. "We just need to do a better job at stopping the run."
