Wes Welker and the New England Patriots are roughly six million dollars apart in guaranteed money, and time is the enemy now. July 16th is the deadline for signing franchise-tagged players to long-term deals. Welker would make 9.5 million in guaranteed in a one year deal, making him a free agent in 2013. The Patriots seem content to let this play out with the offer on the table, but for Welker, every tick of the clock must sound like gunfire. Does he take less and stay with Tom Brady? Having experience a severe knee injury, Welker fully understands that it’s a risk to try to get to free agency in 2013. Welker will be 32, and though he’s been a top five receiver for years, most think Tom Brady has a lot to do with that. It’s highly illogical to think the Patriots would franchise tag him in 2013 at a much higher salary. The question now is how bad Welker wants to be a Patriot, and how much Bill Belichick thinks Welker wants to be a Patriot.
