She’s a sweet ride.

Redskins running back Alfred Morris isn’t about to let his newfound success go to his head.  As a rookie his base salary of $390,000 is peanuts compared to the majority of his millionaire teammates, but it’s still a decent enough yearly wage that Morris could afford himself an expensive car like the Porsches, Cadillacs, BMWs and tricked-out SUVs he sees on a daily basis at the team’s practice facility.

But not Morris, who prefers his silver 1991 Mazda 626, a car he affectionately calls “his Bentley.”

Morris acquired his ride during his junior year at Florida Atlantic University, and he has no plans to give up his ’91 Mazda anytime soon, despite the daily razzing he probably receives from his fellow Skins teammates.  The vehicle holds too much sentimental value for the rookie to get rid of it for a pricier car, and he feels that having a less-than-fancy automobile will help keep him grounded as his NFL success continues to rise.

From The Redskins Blog…

“It has some sentimental value to it now,” Morris said Wednesday before the Redskins headed out for practice. “It just keeps me grounded, where I came from and all the hard work for me to get to this point. So that’s what helps me.”

Morris said he didn’t have a vehicle at all until his junior year at FAU, so he certainly didn’t turn his nose up at “Bentley” when he had the chance to get it.

“I could’ve been like, ‘Ah, I don’t want this piece of crap,’” Morris said. “But I always wanted a car, and it was what I got.”

For a lot of people a car is just a car, and is a simply a means of transportation to get you from point A to point B in a safe and timely manner.  That’s obviously true of Morris, but here’s hoping that when he scores a lucrative contract from the Skins when his rookie deal is up, he upgrades to a nicer, more expensive vehicle that will enhance his street cred…like a 1995 Toyota Corrola.

Now that would be sweet.
