San Francisco’s Justin Smith proved this week the importance of playing in a Super Bowl after the 49ers defensive lineman revealed that he will fight through the pain for a chance to make history in New Orleans on Sunday. Smith risks serious damage to his left triceps during the game after partially injuring the muscles before the playoffs began this winter. In fact, it has been over six weeks since the partial tear, yet Smith has been unable to fully recover – mainly due to playing a central role in the playoffs. He is already scheduled to undergo surgery after Sunday’s game, and could risk being out for the whole offseason if he extends the tear. Yet, despite the warning, Smith revealed his determination to see the job through to the end just five days before he enters the New Orleans Superdome field. “I know how many games I have left now – four more quarters,” he told The Sacramento Bee. “I can do more stuff every week. I think it heals up, obviously, as more time goes by and it’s feeling better.” Indeed, 49ers fans betting NFL will be delighted to hear that Smith, although his game has dropped in recent weeks, remains in the defensive line for Sunday. He’s been consistent in the playoffs, proving a solid double team with Aldon Smith to make five quarterback hurries each to aid San Francisco’s push past Green Bay and Atlanta. These playoff performances expose just how important the Super Bowl means to football players. Smith has never reached the NFL’s showpiece event in a 12-year career and at 33 may not make another after this weekend. Although surgery is already lined up for after the Super Bowl, nothing will stop one of the 49ers most battle-hardened players from realising his dream in front of 73,000 fans. The NFL betting odds indicate that San Francisco could claim football’s most coveted prize on Sunday. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fcuzoogle.com%2F2013%2F01%2F30%2Fsmith-determination-proves-importance-of-super-bowl%2F'; addthis_title = 'Smith+Determination+Proves+Importance+of+Super+Bowl'; addthis_pub = '';
