The Three Quarterbacks

Every day for the next week I will be selecting a position group to analyze as part of our new "State of the Seahawks" series. First up: The Quarterbacks.

From 2003 to 2010, the phrase “quarterback competition” was foreign at Seahawks training camp. Matt Hasselbeck was the starting quarterback, and there was no disputing that.

Now fast forward to 2012. The phrase “quarterback competition” is the only thing people are talking about at the VMAC.

For the past week, Matt Flynn, Tarvaris Jackson and Russell Wilson have supposedly been battling it out over who will be the starting quarterback for (at least to start) the 2012 Seahawks with so far no man really taking a significant lead on the other two. One day it’s Matt Flynn taking reps with the 1st team, and then the next day it’s Tarvaris Jackson or Russell Wilson.

But it really isn’t a competition when you get down to it. The Seahawks wouldn’t have signed Flynn to a 3-year, $26 Million contract with $10 Million guaranteed to have him sit on the bench for a couple years behind Tarvaris Jackson. And all indications are that Flynn will be the starter going into the season, as he has reportedly been the most consistent of the three.

So what do we really know about Matt Flynn besides that he backed up Aaron Rodgers for a couple years in Green Bay? For one, in the single game he started last year in week 17 against the Lions, Flynn threw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns, both Packers records. He has adequate size for the position being 6’2”, 225 lbs, but won’t blow you away with his running abilities.

The general consensus and likely a reason the Seahawks feel he is an upgrade over Jackson is his superior throwing accuracy and timing. Granted he has only played one game and that was within the elite Green Bay offense, but after re-watching that game I have to say that him throwing the ball on Sundays in Seahawks blue would be a breath of fresh air over threw-it-into-triple-coverage Jackson.

One person who we haven’t talked about is rookie Russell Wilson. Coming out of Wisconsin, Wilson was acclaimed for his arm strength, accuracy, awareness and mobility. Sounds like a first round pick, right? If it wasn’t for his 5’11” height, he probably would have been, instead slipping to the Seahawks in the third round.

Wilson has received nothing but praise from coaches and media out of training camp, but the likelihood of the Seahawks starting a rookie at quarterback this year is very, very unlikely. Look for Russell Wilson to be the starting QB in 2014, if not sooner.

I would be surprised if the man under center for the Seahawks in week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals isn’t Matt Flynn. Expect a formal decision regarding the most important spot on the football field by at least the third preseason game, which is usually when the 1st team plays the entire first half.

If the “competition” goes past that point and into the 4th preseason game it could be detrimental.  The team not knowing who their on-field leader is a mere week before the start of the season obviously wouldn’t be the most comfortable of feelings.

As weird as this competition is, I’m putting my trust in Pete Carroll. When it comes to being unconventional with the Seahawks, Uncle Pete has had more success than not. The kajillion transactions days before the 2010 season, the last minute post-lockout free agent signings, his surprise selections during the draft... I frowned on all of those and got proven wrong every time.

That’s not going to happen again.
