Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Wanted To Sign QB Michael Vick In 2009

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be playing against Pittsburgh in Week 5, but if circumstances were different, he could have been playing for the Steelers.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette, coach Mike Tomlin wanted the Steelers to sign Vick in 2009—shortly after he was released from prison and then released by the Atlanta Falcons.

Tomlin's desire to bring in Vick, per Bouchette, wasn't solely based on the quarterback's talent. Another key factor was having the same mentor, former Buccaneers and Colts coach Tony Dungy.

What discouraged Tomlin in the end, however, was the fact that the Steelers' owners, the Rooney family, were against adding a player that might hurt the organization's image and chemistry following a Super Bowl champion.
