Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t sure if either James Harrison (knee) or Troy Polamalu (calf) will take the field in Oakland, but is willing to let them take the field without practicing, if they’re ready that is.

It will sort of go against a long-standing rule of his; traditionally he likes his players to get at least one day of practice during the week before a game. Both are expected to go through an ‘informal’ workout instead.

This is James Harrison and Troy Polamalu we’re talking about. Exceptions can be made.

“I handle all of those situations really on a case-by-case basis,” Tomlin told the Lewiston Sentinel, “with the understanding that the younger you are, the more inexperienced you are, the more practices are necessary before I consider utilizing you.”

Things are looking good for the Steelers, who are coming off stellar performance against the New York Jets, but he wants to see more in the running game. They were able to run the ball with success in their game-clinching 4th quarter drive, but he knows there’s still a lot of work to be done. “That’s not what I’m looking for,” he said. “I’m actually looking for better than that.”

Help looks to be coming in the form of Rashard Mendenhall, who has been practicing the past two weeks.

“Maybe we will bump him around a little more in practice this week,” Tomlin said. “He has done a nice job of running and cutting at full speed. Now, let’s see if he can play a little football.”
