With Will Hill gone, the New York Giants could use some more depth at safety. Perhaps Stevie Brown will be able to retake the reins as a starter alongside Antrel Rolle, but who will back him up? Cooper Taylor, Nat Berhe and Kyle Sebetic are all unproven commodities who have little if not nothing to prove they are capable of stepping up and filling in for Brown on occasion or if he happens to reaggravate the injury. They need veteran help, so why not the top remaining safety on the market, Steve Gregory? Gregory, a Brooklyn native who spent the last two seasons up in New England as a starter for the Patriots, could be a valuable addition as depth and security behind both Brown and Rolle. The 31-year-old had a career-high 79 tackles in 2013 but was cut a cap casualty back in February. The Syracuse product has been in the league for eight years, starting 54 of the 111 games he has appeared in. Though not a player that jumps off the page at you, he did force five takeaways in 2012 (three interceptions and two fumble recoveries). He has been a consistent player throughout his career, averaging close to 40 tackles a year despite spending his first four seasons with the San Diego Chargers as a backup. Gregory’s veteran leadership and football I.Q. could be of value to the G-Men. He was considered one of the smartest players on the Patriots by his teammates. At this point in the offseason, Gregory would probably just love to on an NFL roster somewhere; playing in the New York-New Jersey area would simply be an added bonus. Meanwhile, he would provide support in the defensive backfield and could be a surprising competitor for Brown for the starting job alongside Rolle. Like what you see?
