Tedy Bruschi on what it takes to play OLB in the 3-4. It’s important to note that the Patriots are one of the few teams that expects both OLBs to be able to to flip flop and play either side.
Some 3-4s like the Ravens or Steelers will keep their respective OLBs on one side, and usually that means they can afford to cheat a little bit in terms of having more of a pass rusher on one side, more of a stout guy on the other side.
The Patriots are a match-up based defense so being versatile and comfortable playing on either side is an important characteristic for any tweener they might consider. In 2010, rookie Jermaine Cunningham saw time at both starting spots in the 3-4 defense but also as a DPR (designated pass rusher).
