The Tennessee Titans have been outscored 72-23 so far this season.  Defensive mistakes have been a huge reason for the poor start for the Titans, given they have had a tough schedule for the first two weeks, facing the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers.

Here's where they stand amongst the league's defenses' after the first two weeks.

  • 25th (Tied Buffalo Bills) in overall defense with 403.0 yards per game.
  • 20th in opposition passing yards allowed with 248.0 per game
  • 30th in opposition running yards allowed with 155.0 pergame
  • 32nd in first downs allowed with 52.
  • Second most passing touchdowns allowed at 5.
  • 32nd in tackles with 103.
  • Tied with five teams for second to last amount of sacks with 2.0 in two games.

Essentially near the bottom in every category.  It is only through two games so it is hard to use this as strong perspective on how the season will play out, but the Titans have looked like a mediocre defense, lacking to stop any type of play.

The Patriots and Chargers have average 5.7 yards per play against the Tennessee defense.  Although they did limit the damage against Tom Brady and Philip Rivers, the defense has not been able to shut down the running game or tight ends whatsoever.

Steven Ridley of the Patriots tore up the front seven for 125 yards in week one, with a handful of backs racking up 148 yards for the Chargers.  They have been allowing to much cushion on the line, which has translated into some weak running teams to dominate them for 60 minutes.

If the coaching staff starts putting more pressure on the quarterback and puts on more defensive schemes, the Titans could start shutting down offenses.  They have plenty of talent on the roster, but they aren't using it to their advantage.

The next two weeks against the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans will make or break the season for Tennessee, as they have a chance to turn around their lack of intimidation and get a pair of crucial wins.
