In this offseason, we saw two Patriot assistants take head coaching jobs. Now, former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel is a head coach.

The Tennessee Titans announced Saturday that the Texans defensive coordinator is the new head coach of the team. This was a quick hire since the team just fired coach Mike Mularkey five days ago.

Vrabel won three titles with the Patriots before retiring in 2010. He coached in Ohio State from 2011-2013. He then joined the Texans in 2014 as a linebackers coach. Even though his defense struggled in the only season he was defensive coordinator, he is a proven leader. “He’s got that good ability to be tough on his players, but also have a chance to put his arm around them and pick them up,” said Texans head coach Bill O’Brien in an NFL.com interview. “He’s got a good motivational way about him. Brings a lot of cachet to the field, because he played 14 years, played in a [Patriots] defense that required a lot of smart people and a lot of communication.”

The question now is who Vrabal hires as offensive coordinator since Mularkey’s firing was due in part to quarterback Marcus Mariota’s poor development. Regardless, Vrabel should bring a lot of energy to a solid Titans team next fall.
