Money motivates.

Tennessee Titans running back, Javon Ringer, is in a contract year and looking to become a starter.

Chris Johnson signed a $53 million contract with Tennessee in 2011, and his performace since isn't worth the price tag.

RInger is hungrier for a paycheck than Johnson this season and should legitimately be considered as the starting back for 2012, with Johnson coming off the bench in third-down situations.

More than anything it might require Johnson to put in the caliber of work on the field necessary to regain his starting role in the future. If Johnson doesn't fight for his starting job, then he isn't the man for the job anyway.

Ringer put up just three touchdowns in his three season in the NFL, but his time to perform is now. Johnson averaged 2.7 yards per carry in his preseason opener. If given the opportunity, Ringer can easily perform at a level comparable to Johnson.

Johnson rushed for 1,047 yards in 2011. Rushing for over 1,000 yards is great, but it is plausible Ringer could put up the same numbers if given the nod as starter for the first half of 2012.

Throwing up 523 rushing yards over eight games is realistic. Ringer would only require 65.5 yards per game. If the Titans give Ringer the ball 20 times, he would need only 3.27 yards per carry to equal Johnson. Easy.

If Ringer can't pull off a 3.3 average per game then Johnson could regain starting role. Simple as that.

Washington's Roy Helu managed 4.2 yards per carry in 2011. Indianapolis' Donald Brown averaged 4.8 yards.  Even Miami's Daniel Thomas ran for 3.5 yards per carry in 2011.

Give Ringer a shot. Johnson desperately needs to perform well in the Titans' second preseason game to win over Tennessee fans.
